CONTAINMENT BY DESIGN

Thermal Management and Safety

Thermal runaway, and holding back the chain reaction.

What matters is that if a cell does fail, the effects are hard to pass on to the cells around it.
KULR Technology Group has built its battery safety and reliability technology on a foundation of more than 40 years of thermal management and flight-qualified design.

THERMAL RUNAWAY

The danger is the runaway at the end of the chain.

A design in which one cell's failure is hard to pass on.

When something goes wrong inside a lithium-ion cell, its temperature can climb sharply and reach thermal runaway. It does not end with one cell. Heat from that cell reaches its neighbor, the neighbor goes into thermal runaway, and the effect spreads through the whole pack.
KULR isolates the cells from one another and manages the flow of heat: a design that contains the effects of a fault, should one occur.

  1. Isolation

Cells are kept apart, so heat from a failed cell is hard to pass on to the next.

  2. Thermal management

The flow of heat is designed so that high temperatures do not concentrate in one place.

  3. Containment

A structure that keeps the effects of a failure from spreading outward.

PROVEN IN ORBIT

Trust built where failure is not an option.

Selected for space, and evaluated against external standards.

Equipment in space cannot simply be replaced after launch. From cell selection to pack structure to thermal management, the design has to assume that failure can happen and be safe regardless. KULR's battery technology has been selected under these conditions.

Deployments

  1. Artemis II

Crewed lunar flyby mission. Selected as the payload power source for NARA Space.

  2. ARGO Space

Selected as the battery for a commercial orbital mission.

External standards and testing

  1. NASA WI-37A

The cell screening standard used for KULR ONE Space.

  2. UL 9540A

A test method for evaluating thermal runaway and fire propagation in energy storage systems. The K1M-BBU is UL 9540A Listed.

SAFETY FIRST

Because these are power systems that sit near people.

We take on what space demands, and what disaster response demands.

Evacuation shelters, government offices, factories, event venues. Most of the places where KULR provides energy storage systems are right next to people.
That is why safety comes first.

  1. Monitoring and control by the BMS

  2. Cell isolation

  3. Thermal management

  4. Propagation resistance in thermal runaway

Drawing on the safety design KULR developed for space,
we will keep pursuing the safety of energy storage systems.
